Protect Your Dental Implants by Avoiding These 5 Harmful Habits

Breaking cigarette, quitting smoking to protect dental implants

Under ideal circumstances, dental implants can last for a lifetime. The prosthetic teeth on top of them can also endure for many years. What can you do to help your restored smile stand the test of time? One of the most important things you can do is avoid harmful habits that could lead to damage or infection. This blog post discusses some activities that you should steer clear of if you want your dental implants to stay healthy and functional.

Smoking

The rate of dental implant failure is significantly higher in individuals who smoke cigarettes. There are several reasons for this. For example, smoking adversely affects the immune system and can compromise the body’s ability to fight off oral infections. Plus, the nicotine in tobacco can decrease saliva production, leading to a dry mouth. Harmful bacteria find it much easier to flourish and grow in a dry mouth.

Granted, kicking the habit can be extremely difficult, especially for individuals who have smoked for years. Your general physician may be able to provide information and resources to help you conquer smoking for good.

Skipping Checkups

Even if you do not have any natural teeth left, you should still visit your dentist for regular checkups. During these visits, your dental team will look for any potential signs of trouble with your implants and recommend remedial measures. You will also receive a thorough oral cleaning; your prosthetic teeth may be removed so your implant abutments can be cleared of bacterial accumulation and any food particles that might have collected on them.

Neglecting Oral Hygiene

Poor oral hygiene is a leading cause of infection around dental implants. In addition to brushing thoroughly twice a day, you should also floss at least once a day. Depending on what type of implant restoration you have, you might need to use a floss threader or another special tool to clean beneath your artificial teeth. A water flosser works well for many people.

Chewing on Hard Objects

Dental implant restorations are quite durable, and they are designed to be able to stand up to virtually any food. However, chewing on things like ice, hard candies, or pen caps could cause them to suffer premature wear and tear. They might even incur chips and cracks.

Using Your Teeth as Tools

Your teeth can seem like a convenient means for opening packages, trimming your fingernails, or even taking the tags off of new clothes. However, such habits could easily cause your restorations to break. It is best to use a knife, scissors, or another appropriate tool to handle daily tasks.

Protecting your dental implants might require you to make some adjustments to your habits, but your efforts will be rewarded with a healthier smile that has the potential to serve you well for decades.
